I’m a big fan of a soft, fluffy, thick sourdough crust (aka Neapolitan style pizza) so this is what predominantly features in my recommendations below, along with some New York and Detroit style options. New York style has a thin crispy crust, whereas Detroit style has a thick squidgy base somewhat akin to focaccia. There aren’t many foods that are so universally favoured, but pizza definitely seems to be one of them – and Bristol has plenty to go around!

Pizza Workshop
- Bertha’s Pizza, Wapping Wharf – one of my top pizza spots in the city, serving truly delicious sourdough pizza, along with tasty handmade gelato for afters. They’ve also created a frozen range stocked all over Bristol which I need to try!
- Pizza Workshop, Whiteladies – our local go-to, this cosy restaurant has a satisfying numbering system for all of their sourdough pizzas. At lunchtime they also serve boccas, which are hot sourdough sandwiches. Yum!
- Gruffletops, street food stall – if like me you wish that more of your pizza consisted of a fluffy sourdough crust, this one’s for you. Cracking toppings too.
- Pizzarova, Park Street, Gloucester Rd, North Street & Wapping Wharf – sublime sourdough pizza with at-home kits also available.

Pizzarova
- The Stable, Harbourside – this is a great place to go if you’ve got a large group and/or you want to try a Cider Tasting Board! The crusts here are of the thinner variety and there’s always a great range of creative toppings.
- Pizzucci, Gloucester Road – offers pizza by-the-slice as well as 11 or 16 inch pizzas.
- Bosco, Whiteladies Road – get some arancini before tucking into a sourdough pizza.
- Pizza is Lovely – these multi-talented folk serve Neapolitan style pizza at Left Handed Giant in Finzel’s Reach, Detroit and New York style pizza at Renato’s on King Street, and New York style at their Stokes Croft pop-up (currently being remodelled).

Pizza is Lovely
Well there we go, another one bites the crust.
