Bristol’s Best Asian Food

Bristol has numerous Asian offerings to satisfy your cravings, from bao to bibimap, Korean fried chicken to katsu curry, and summer rolls to sotbap. Here are my eight favourites:

Tuk Tuck

  • Tuk Tuck, Stokes Croft – this casual eatery serves some of the best bao in town along with delicious curries and bibimaps. The Tuk Tuck team also has sister restaurants Dangun and Pocha which are worth checking out too.
  • Seven Lucky Gods, Wapping Wharf – this Japanese inspired restaurant serves a mix of small sharing plates and sushi, and is somewhere I love to take guests. The dishes are well thought through and full of flavour, and there’s always a great buzzy atmosphere.

Seven Lucky Gods

  • Izakaya, College Green and Clifton – an underrated gem, serving an extensive range of fantastic Japanese dishes and sushi at reasonable prices.
  • Viet Kitchen, Cotham – the second branch of this delightful eatery (the first is located in Stokes Croft) serving authentic Vietnamese food truly transports you to South East Asia. The summer rolls were fantastic along with everything else we tried.
  • Mr Noodle, street food van – if you ever spot these guys at the Saturday Harbourside market or another event, make a beeline immediately. Their katsu curry is divine, as are their loaded Korean fried chicken strips

Viet Kitchen

  • Eatchu, Old City and Clifton Triangle – a firm favourite with some of the best gyoza about, my go-to accompaniment is the dressed rice. They’ve recently expanded their menu, with new dumpling, rice and noodle flavours, and the option to go Half & Half with your gyoza fillings!
  • Dangun, Old City – a relaxed, unpretentious spot tucked away on St Nicholas Street, the fried cauliflower, gyoza and Korean fried chicken are all excellent.
  • Dongnae, Redland – authentic Korean cooking at its finest, the new sister to Bokman. You can choose between a tasting menu or a la carte, which the servers kindly go through in detail. The bulgogi beef was a standout item, which you load into a lettuce leaf along with various banchan and ssam – delicious!

Dongnae

At the recent Feast On food festival at the Downs I tried some delicious Shandong Shrimp Noodles from Wangs, which were really fresh and flavourful. I’m keen to eat at their restaurant in Montpelier too, and I’d also like to try Clouds in St Werburghs and Jean’s Bistro on Gloucester Road. Are there any other spots I should have on my radar?
